  • A "Little" Chat
  • "Heads up, lads!.."
  • Rowing Towards our Doom
  • "W-Wait! Over there!"
  • The Result of Scylla
  • Odysseus had given his crewmates a speech about how they have survived and endured many of their trials on sea. In the text, it had even said "Heads up, lads! We must obey the orders as I give them. Get the oar shafts in your hands, and lay back (775) hard on your benches; hit these breaking seas." This was Odysseus's confirmation and motivation to his very tired and weary crew.
  • After the "pep-talk" with his crew, Odysseus and the men had started rowing onto the sea tides that were present, only to find something very frightening! In the text, Odysseus says "By heaven! when she vomited, all the sea was like a cauldron (800) seething over intense fire, when the mixture suddenly heaves and rises." This shows that a water creature (a she) had caused the seas to erupt and cause danger to the scenery.
  • The water-like beast, Scylla, had made the seas rocky and churned with danger, taking Odysseus's crew with her down into the whirlpool. In the text, it had said "Then Scylla made her strike, (810) whisking six of my best men from the ship. I happened to glance aft at ship and oarsmen and caught sight of their arms and legs, dangling high overhead." Readers can infer that the deadly situation was gruesome and the last time that Odysseus would here the cries of his men.
