  • Dred Scott was an enslaved African American who lived from 1719-1858. He had two daughters and a wife who were also slaves. He was owned by an army surgeon named John Emerson
  • Dred Scott traveled to Illinois with his owner in 1836, where the two lived for two years. Then, Dr. Emerson moved to Wisconsin and brought Scott along. It was in Wisconsin that Dred Scott met his wife. He stayed in Wisconsin for another 2 years.
  • How can I be a slave if I'm in a free state?
  • After his owner, Dr. John Emerson died, Mrs. Emerson sold Dred to an Army general; it was only then when he sought freedom. He first offered to buy his release from Ms. Emerson for $300, but when she refused, he took the matter to the courts. The first time he went to court in 1847, he lost. However, when the case was retried by the St. Louis circuit court in 1850, he and his family were freed.
  • Finally! My freedom!
  • Dred Scott worked as a Janitor for Two years in peace. But, after two years, the Missouri supreme court decided to reopen the case and reverse the decision of the lower court.
  • In 1854, the Missouri Circuit Court Dred Scott went to upheld the decision of the Missouri supreme court, which left only one other court. Dred Scott took his case to the United States Supreme Court in 1857. It was ruled that because Dred Scott was black, he was not a citizen; therefore, he couldn't sue. It was also ruled that the Missouri compromise of 1820 was unconstitutional.
  • ORDER IN THE COURT!
  • After the court ruling, the sons of Peter Blow, Scott's owner before Dr. John Emerson, purchased Scott and his wife and set him free in 1857. But only nine months later, on September 17th, 1858, Dred Scott died of tuberculosis.
