  • Hi students! Today we will be talking about what UbD is. UbD stands for understanding by design.  It has three stages.
  • There are many advantages to using the UbD method. When teachers utilize the UbD method, the curriculum standards support the understandings, versus when you don't use this method, the opposite happens. UbD allows you to answer the big questions of the unit and look at the bigger picture to centralize the student-activities. UbD helps ensure that the projected outcomes the teacher wishes to accomplish can be aligned with the curriculum and lessons.
  • The first stage of UbD is Identifying Desired Results. This stage involves asking yourself "What is it that I want the students to understand and know and be able to do?". This stage involves the established goals of the unit. These are derived from the units main ideas and what you want your students to be able to know for the assessments. Stage 1 focuses on making sure that all understandings about the big concepts and ideas are understood by the end of the unit.
  • The second stage of UbD is determining assessment evidence. This involves making sure you know that your students know what you want them to know. During this stage, this is when the students will do their performance tasks which will show the teacher whether the class is actually grasping the concepts. How your students do on the tasks can be a way of feedback for you as the teacher to help you know what you need to work on more with your students.
  • The third stage of UbD is teaching and learning, This stage focuses on you figuring out what you need to do for your students in order for them to be ready for the assessment. This assessment could be given in many different formats such as a project, presentation, or pen and paper test.  Stage three involves the learning activities which are activities that answer your question of "How will the students learn what I want them to?".
  • UbD is great way to ensure all of your learning goals get met. Learning goals are the intended purposes  and achievements for a specific unit. These can be met by firstly asking yourself what you want the students to know and be able to do by the end of the unit and for the assessment. Then go from there and your students' success can be met.
  • Thank you all for listening to my presentation on UbD. Now that you guys are knowledgeable on this learning method, I want you guys to write a two-paragraph reflection on UbD.
