  • The main external conflict is between Ralph and Jack as leader of the boys. Ralph attempts to create order and prioritizes keeping the fire burning so they can get rescued. Meanwhile, Jack thinks hunting for pigs is most important. The tension between them is a constant source of conflict.
  • CLIMAX
  • One boy claims to have seen a beast-like creature and worries if it will come to eat him at night. The introduction of the "beastie" creates an element of fear in the boys. Ralph tries to convince them that there is no beast, and Jack claims he and his hunters will find and kill the beast.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Jack breaks off to start his own tribe filled with hunting, food and fun. Jack and his hunting party vow to kill the beast. Jack kills a large pig and mounts its head on a stake as a gift for the beast.
  • RESOLUTION
  • Simon is brutally attacked and killed when he stumbles from the jungle to tell the boys about the dead pilot. Soon after, Ralph and Piggy go to confront Jack's tribe after they steal Piggy's glasses. Piggy is killed when a giant boulder is dropped on him, shattering the conch as well.
  • Jack and the hunters turn on Ralph and begin to hunt him. Ralph must flee and hide or he will be killed. In their attempt to flush Ralph out, the boys set the jungle on fire.
  • Ralph runs to the beach to escape Jack. There, he encounters a British Naval Officer. As he attempts to tell him what has happened, he breaks down into tears. When the other boys arrive, they also begin to sob.
