  • The message the author hopes you take away from this is to be grateful for what you have. At this point, Aza doesn't seem as grateful as she really should be. This event tells us more about Aza and what she values. Along with this, the comic shows off the strong emotions Aza would have been feeling about her father's death and this "retreat."
  • “Davis and I had gone to Sad Camp together, which is what we’d called Camp Spero, this place down in Brown County for kids with dead parents” (15).
  • When Davis learn's of Aza and Daisy's plan to find his father and earn the police reward, he comes to the conclusion that they will only ever be around for his money. Because of this, he gives Aza the $100,000 reward himself so the girls will stop the search. The author wants us to realize Aza's true feelings for Davis and his money. This comic provides the evidence we need to know that Aza was not interested in Davis for his money, and it provides another life changing experience for Aza.
  • “A hundred thousand dollars” he said, and offered it to me (110).
  • As Aza continues to grow and learn from previous locked-away experiences, more distractions begin to arise. This is evident when Aza loses focus and slams into a car. This instantaneous event puts Daisy and her in danger, buts also leads to a damaged-beyond-repair car. Yet again, this experience leads to a breakdown resulting in Aza's hand sanitizer consumption. The author wants you to feel these extreme lows, but also the growth that comes from these traumatic experiences. A comic form of this event is important in showing the high strung emotions, and all of its damages.
  • “HOLMESY!” she shouted, but too late. I looked up only in time to see that I’d kept accelerating while the traffic had slowed. I couldn’t even get my foot to the break before we slammed into the SUV in front of us (217).
