- A young girl named Kit who is 16 years old is from the tropical island Barbados. But then her grandpa dies she is no longer able to live there. Kit moves to Connecticut to live with her ant and uncle , she is not looking forward to this voyage.
- After the long and hard voyage on the boat, Kit has finally arrived t Connecticut. She is very disappointed with her sights, it is nothing like the tropical island Barbados. A little girl is traveling on the ship as well. And as they get to the shore she drops her wooden doll. Kit knowing the ocean jumps in and grabs the doll. Now everyone here is from England so hey assume she can swim. Another boy jumps in nd trys to save her. Everyone is shocked by her actions.
- Once Kit gets back on the boat from saving the doll everyone is speechless. One man sitting behind her named John Holbrook asked Kit how she learned to swim. She told the man that she learned from her father. Then she wonders why everyone else never learned to swim. Once Kit reaches shore she is confused.
