The Cave of a Cyclops

- Odysseus and his men arrive upon the island of Sicily. He sends a scouting party out, with himself leading. They discover a cave filled with goats, cheese, and milk. They were going to leave but Odysseus insisted they stay and see who's cave it was.
- Surprisingly the cave was inhabited by a Cyclops, a one-eyed beastly creature. The monster picked up a large flat stone and covered the entrance with it. He began to make a fire but as the flames grew bigger, the men were revealed.
- The cyclops was extremely surprised to find these unwelcome guests in his home. Odysseus tried to talk to him but the cyclops was in no hospitable mood. Odysseus trying to talk to him made it worse.
- My name is Odysseus, sacker of cities.
- The cyclops killed 2 men each night for the two days they were stuck in the cave. On the first night with the cyclops, Odysseus was very close to killing him but then had second thoughts and backed down.
- Instead of going for an immature kill, Odysseus wisely put together an elite plan. First, he got the Cyclops drunk, and then as he slept, stabbed him in the eye with a burning hot poll.
- The cyclops ran out of the cave scared and in pain. He tried to block his goats and sheep from escaping with his hand but Odysseus and his men crawled below the sheep and escaped. As he fled away on his ship Odysues yelled his name at the cyclops which is something he would soon regret.
