- There was a lot of gold in this ship
- Ha! Thank you Spanishmen!
- In Tudor times, Spain was the richest, most powerful country in the world. It had a huge army and Spanish treasure ships were bringing fortune in gold back to Spain from newly discovered lands.
- But in 1588, Spain´s King Philip II decided to focus all his country´s great power and wealth on one thing- the invasion of England. He had a lot of reasons to be angry with the English.
- For example, the English sailors had been stealing gold and silver from Spanish ships.
- Also, Philip (a Catholic) had heard news that Mary, Queen of Scots (another catholic), had been executed by Elizabeth I. He thought that the people who had killed a Catholic queen should be punished.
- By the summer of 1588, Philip had assembled one of the greatest fleets of warships the world had ever seen. There were 130 Spanish ships, known as an Armada, many painted red and gold. Philip´s objective was to remove Elizabeth from the throne and become king of England
- But England had a navy too, which was prepared to fight to the death to defend the country against the foreign invaders.
