- TheKing of England, Edward, died and created a three way battlefor the throne. Harold Godwinson was his brother-in-law and was crowned king the same day.

- William, Duke of Normandy, believed that heshould be king. He was blood related to Edward, and Harold swore an oath saying that he would support William as king. He believed that Harold sinned because he broke the oath so he got support from the Pope.

- English Battle the Vikings

- Harold Godwinson traveled to Northern England and suprised the Vikings. He killed the leader and his brother (which was on the vikings side.) The English defeated the Vikings and only 24 oftheir ships returned home.

- After he defeated the Vikings, Harold traveled to SouthernEngland to fight William, the leader of the French. the long bloodybattle was called the Battle of Hastings.
