  • Initiated in the early 1960s, the Mediterranean diet is a way of eating that was influenced by the customs and cuisine of southern Spain, southern Italy, and Crete. It differs from Mediterranean cuisine, which encompasses the regional foods of the Mediterranean region.
  • Plant foods form the basis of the Mediterranean diet. This means that meals are composed of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, and legumes. The Mediterranean diet contains moderate amounts of seafood, poultry, dairy, and eggs.
  • The Standard American Diet (SAD) is a contemporary eating style that has long-term, detrimental health effects on American adults and children nationwide. The Standard American Diet, by definition, consists of foods that have been highly processed and have added fat, sugar, and sodium. In this diet, there is a severe deficiency in the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and lean protein.
  • Fried food, desserts made with grains, fatty dairy products, prepared meals, processed meats (such as deli meats and bacon), lean meat, refined grains, such as white pasta and flour, sweetened beverages with sugar are based in the typical American diet
