After watching the many videos I grew a deeper understanding of the importance of communication. It not only serves as a tool to understand one another but a way to connect with the world. It gives those who need it a voice and the freedom to express themselves however they wish. I appreciated how these videos highlighted the various ways these individuals used their devices to branch out into different parts of society. I found it fascinating how the videos demonstrated the evolution of the different communication tools. The videos did a good job at naming the many tools available to aid in communication. It also emphasized how evaluations and professionals can make mistakes which can lead to limitations. It is crucial that we are aware of all the communication tools available to give students what they need to share what is on their minds. It is also important to make sure that we do not judge someone abilities before we have gotten to know them.
I liked that the videos demonstrated through the lives of various individuals the negative effects of not being able to communicate. In many cases they felt so frustrated that he would rather give up trying to communicate because the effort required was beyond their reach. Either that or the method was much too antiquated and not efficient for their level of thinking. This shows the importance of matching the appropriate device to the specific needs and level of the individual. Communication is as one of the individuals in the video mentioned, the foundation to forming relationships. Which is why the effort to facilitate communication should be of upmost importance to everyone.
The videos were informative because they demonstrated the different apps and devices used to assist in communication. For example, porloquo2go, autism express (to express feelings), look in my eyes (to practice making eye contact), and AAC devices all have made a difference in the lives of the people presented in the videos. The reason why these apps seem to be effective is because they are constant in pacing and tone of voice etc. The reason why the devices are effective is because not only do they require less effort than typing letters out one by one but they give the user the freedom to interpret the images used. From all of this I have come to understand and value the importance of knowing the individual to understand who will benefit from what type of tool. As well as the importance of being to voice ones thoughts no matter the challenges.
