- ExpositionDuring a Carnival in Italy, Montresor finds Fortunato and offers to share a drink of his bottle of Amontillado wine. Fortunato doesn't refuse because he is drunk. Montresor offers to take Fortunato to his catacombs to get the wine.

- ConflictMontresor is greatly insulted by Fortunato. Montresor never explains what has happened but the reader perceives that is unforgivable. Montresor is so upset with Fortunato that he begins enacting his revenge.

- Rising ActionMontresor leads Fortunato into his wine vault. Montresor repeatedly asks if they must turn back because of Fortunato's bad cough but he drinks wine to calm it down.

- ClimaxWhen they reach the catacombs, there is no Amontillado but a hole in the wall. Montresor chains up Fortunato in the hole and begins to seal it shut with Fortunato thinking it is a joke.
- Falling ActionThe last few bricks are laid. No longer believing it is a joke, Fortunato yells for Montresor to stop and let him out.
- ResolutionMontresor walks away while Fortunato screams. Montresor gets away with happy with his revenge.
