- In “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” by Rod Serling, there are many different themes and interpretations of the teleplay. One of those themes is humanity is its own worst enemy. One example of this is on page 82 when Charlie shoots Pete Van Horn. This is important because it shows how quick humans are to kill, even if they kill one close to them. In addition, the scene on page 85 where the residents of Maple Street blame each other further contributes to this theme. The narrator states, “The people shout, accuse, scream.” This showcases how humanity is quick to find somebody to blame and accuse, even if they’ve known each other for years. Furthermore, on page 85 the narrator says, “Several close camera shots suggest the coming of violence: A hand fires a rifle. A fist clenches. A hand grabs the hammer from VAN HORN’s body, etc.” This is crucial because it reveals that humanity will fight and kill over just a hint of suspicion. In conclusion, there are many themes in Rod Serling’s “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.” One of those themes is humanity is its own worst enemy, which is shown multiple times in the teleplay. This teleplay shows the theme because it exhibits how humanity will fight or even kill, for just a hint of suspicion.
