  • Slowly growing more frigid, the sight of his dog compainion begins evoked an idea in the man heads about "the story of a man, caught in a storm, who killed an animal and sheltered himself inside the dead body and thus was saved" (London 76). The consideration of killing others for his own goal to succeed reveals how far his selfish notion would take him. Showing
  • ….I could kill this dog, and live in to carcass…but that’d be insane…or would it?
  • The man gradullay starts to panic as he discvers the reality of his situation and starts to consider extreme measures for self-preservation.
  • As the man continues on his path, his heart started to pound as "a certain fear of death came upon him. He realized that it was no longer a mere problem of freezing his fingers and toes...It was a problem of life and death" (London 77). The chill of the realization of death overcame the man due to his ignoring the old man's advice and his own pride. And because of these character flaws, the man slowly decays because of the cold now finally understanding the situation he's in.
  • I'M GOING TO DIE! I'M GOING TO DIE!
  • The man begins to fall from his egostical thought process to a desperation after realizing life or death could be the matter of this situation.
  • Lying in the snow, the man's thoughts pinpoint to one idea as he murmured in his final breath, "You were right, old fellow. You were right" (London 79). Getting more weak by the second, the man admits to his hubris and denial of advice about not traveling alone. He begrudingly accepts his defeat and passes away with nothing but regret in his still cold eyes.
  • The old man was right...now I'm going to die due to my ignorance. Darn my pride that has overcome myself
  • As the man begins to succumb to the freezing harsh cold, he finally accepts that the old man on Sulphur Creek was right about not traveling alone.
