  • Ava is being interviewed for her first#160;job. She is feeling nervous, and also#160;excited. She is meeting with Claire,#160;manager at Indigo. Claire is annoyed#160;that she has to spend her morning#160;interviewing a teenage girl.

  •
  • Good morning! My name is Ava, thanks for meeting#160;with me today!
  • She's only 17.#160;I don't even know#160;why I'm#160;interviewing her.
  • Ava explains her passion for books and#160;skills to Claire. Ava didn't think she was#160;doing that badly, but Claire's facial#160;expression made her believe she needed#160;to do better. Claire was not interested in what Ava had to say.
  • I really enjoy all genres of#160;books, so I could help#160;customers find what#160;they are looking for, and#160;suggest ideas to them. I#160;also have a great#160;memory, so I can locate items in the store#160;quickly.

  • She's way too young to have a job . Working with#160;customers? I don't think a#160;17 year old girl should be#160;representing this store.
  • I don't think Claire will hire me, she#160;doesn't look#160;impressed.
  • Ava felt anxious, she wasn't sure she had done a great job convincing#160;Claire she would be a good employee.

  • Listen Ava, you're only 17, and I just think#160;that's too young to have this kind of#160;responsibility. You might be great for this#160;position one day, but right now you are not an adult, you have no experience, and#160;you need to be older to be taken seriously#160;here.

  •
  • Ava was shocked, realizing Claire wasn't going to hire her because she is not an#160;adult. Claire was happy she had gotten#160;that over with, and excited to get back#160;to her regular morning schedule, she#160;thought it was hilarious that Ava#160;thought she would be taken seriously.
  • Claire, with all due respect, I don't think you should judge a person by their age before getting to know them.#160;
  • Ava, I'm going to give you a piece of#160;information I hope you carry with you for#160;the rest of your life. Do not stand up for#160;yourself against someone older than you,#160;they know better. Don't make a fool of yourself. Just accept it, and move on! Stop bothering them with your problems!
  •
  • Ava realizes that Claire isn't going to#160;listen to what she says, so she takes a#160;different approach.#160;Claire is getting very agitated with Ava.
  • Do you know what would be great? It would be great if adults could look at children and not say they aren't smart enough, they don't know#160;enough, they're too young, they don't know what they're doing, or they#160;aren't good enough.#160;We have to deal with enough of that right now, without your help.#160;So it would be great if one day you said hey, they are smart, they do#160;have experience, they are good enough.
  • You know what? Now you are starting to bother#160;me! I don't know why you think you have an opinion about this, but you won't be hired by me!#160;
  •
  • Ava thanked Claire#160;for her time, and left with a feeling of determination. Ava knew that she#160;would one day speak out aboutage discrimination.
  • BOOKS,
  • MUSIC,
  • AND MORE
  • I could've already had my coffee, and been on my#160;break by now, but#160;instead I had to listen to her talk for half an hour!
