  • For this project, you will need to get into groups of three. I'll give you 20 minutes to get into groups.
  • After that, you will have the rest of the class to work on your project.
  • May I be in your group?
  • With you? Never! You're such a nerd.
  • May I be in your group?
  • Sure! When you stop being a dork!
  • James, you don't have to work with them. I can help you with the project.
  • But we need to have three people total to finish the project on time. How are we going to finish?
  • We'll just have to work faster. I'm John. I make maps in my free time as well, so I think we'll manage. What do you say?
  • I can work with that.
  • Even though it may be more difficult to finish the project with just two of us, at least he will accept me for who I am.
  • This scene connects to the essential question by showing an instance where an individual should stand up against society. During James's History class, the teacher assigns the class a group project. James tries to join a group several times, but he is rejected by all of them due to his different interests and personality. He is not who society, in this case his classmates, wants him to be, so they reject him. He keeps trying to join a group in vain. But, a boy named John tells him that he doesn't need to work with those who scorn him. He offers to work with James on the project. Even though it'll be more difficult to finish the project with just the two of them, James agrees to work with John. He thinks it'll be better because John accepts him for who he is, instead of refusing to help him for being different.
  • James keeps trying to join a group, but is rejected every time because of how different he is compared to other students. He is polite, intelligent, and makes maps as a hobby. Most students just go with the flow of the water. James keeps trying to join a group, but a boy suddenly approaches him...
