- "She sank to her knees and clutches Papa-Nnukwu's body, shaking it."When Papa-Nnukwu died, it struck something in the whole family. it triggered Kambili and Jaja into going back home, while also influencing Aunty Ifeoma's family, by them recognizing how much they missed and loved their cousins.
- Jaja Kambili's New beginning
- "Yes, Papa."When Kambili is punished by Papa, it seems as though she has referred back to her old habits of obeying him and believing every word he says. However, after this punishment, we see how she changes her ways of coping through the abuse.
- Kambili Amaka
- I hope you and Jaja come for Easter
- "Everything I do for you, I do for your own good."We see Papa Eugene's manipulation, and although this scene hints that Papa was treated unfairly, what is more important is that Kambili unconsciously thinks about the painting rather than succumbing to Papa's excuse.
- Kambili's Coping

- "It was wrapped in black cellophane paper, as well,"Aunty Ifeoma's purple hibiscus is a strong symbol throughout the story (hence the title). In this scene especially I see it as a representation of rebirth specifically to Jaja kambili. As well as new thoughts and feelings erupting since they got back from Aunty Ifeoma's, they have brought a physical symbol to express how they have changed since being thee
- They aren't just sticks, they are stalks of purple hibiscuses
- When Kambili and Jaja first came to Aunty Ifeoma's house, Amaka seemed to be irritated by Kambili. When Kambili and Jaja left, after Papa Nnukwu's death, they seem to have created an unspoken mutual loving relationship with each other. And while talking on the phone with one another, Kambili smiles (which is usually rare for her) and realizes she feels hopeful to see Amaka again.
- "I want to go, too," I said, smiling.
- "I saw only Father Amadi's clay-colored face and heard only 'You have good legs for running.' "Finally we see permanent changes in Kambili and how she is using her new memories to cope through coming back home and the abuse she has to endure.
