- Grandfather buys toto from a Tonga driver for five rupees. Toto was a pretty monkey and he looked so out of place that grandfather decided to add him to his private zoo.
- I will keep Toto a secret from my wife until she is in a particularly good mood
- grandfather and I put him away in a little closet in my bedroom where he was tied securely - or so we thoughtto a peg in the wall
- A few hours later, when Grandfather and I came back to release Toto, we found that the he tore up the wallpaper that grandfather had chosen for the walls and shredded my school blazer
- His presence in the house still a secret, Toto was now transferred to a big cage in the servants’ quarters where a number of Grandfather’s pets lived very sociably together but the monkey wouldn’t allow any of the other pets to sleep at night
- so Grandfather, who had to leave to Dehra Dun the next day decided to take him along
- He and Toto made it through most of the trip without any incident but at the railway turnstile Toto suddenly poked his head out of the bag and scared the ticket collector
