- Dani is presented with a vision of herself as the answer to her problem suggesting she herself is the problem
- You are the Monster
- Transformation
- The reflection disappears forming a whirlpool. The shot zooms in after the whirlpool first forms to focus on the swirls The shot has a very shallow depth of field.
- Dani remembers one of her earliest traumatic memories a Friday night dinner where she got in trouble for reading at the table. There is a picture in the book of the monster.The camera pans across the room. The next shot is from behind Dani and zooms into the book focusing on the importance of it.
- Don't Rebel
- Dani gets yelled at for wanting to read by her father. Her mother wants to intervene but is too scared. This is the first time the monster appears in the real world as a reflection in her bedroom window.The shot is filmed entirely from behind Dani here as we begin to see things from her point of view
- Realization
- We switch back to the lake where the monster has now surfaced from the whirlpool. Dani breaks down in tears realizing the monster is her. This is a zoom shot ending up as a closeup to emphasize Danis emotions. The zoom is slow and smooth.
- Goodbye Dad
- Anger before Healing
- We flashback to Danis father yelling at her for wearing the wrong clothes as her mother watches on wanting to intervene but powerless to stop. Once again the monster is present and can be seen in the window the entire shot. Note the absence of decorations now and whats left is now darker signifying Danis worsening home life.The camera here is behind Dani with a shallow depth of field to keep her mother blurrier but her father in view to emphasize the lack of power anyone has in this situation.
- New Home
- Dani begins to realize the monster has always been there and isn't new.
- New Room
- Danis mom finally finds the strength to leave leading to a blowout fight right in front of Dani. The monster can be seen in the puddle. The arrows represent vigorous arm flailing.To help emphasize the fight the shots here are short and rapid. This is filmed in dark rainy conditions.
- Hunger
- Dani begins to blame the monster thinking it is responsible for her pain since it was always there. She leaps at the monster to attack it.Tracking shot as Dani leaps
- Reevaluation
- Another flashback shows the delapidated house which is all her mother could afford after leaving. Here the monster is present but is more worried then angry. Wide panning shot to allow us to take in the new house and neighborhood
- Bullies
- Danis new room is a reflection of where her life is at now. She's escaped her father but has merely found another broken home. The camera follows Dani to the room focusing on things like the leaky pipes and peeling wallpaper as she discovers them.
- The Monster Attacks
- Danis mom can't afford full meals anymore leading to a lot of nights with no or little food.
- The Truth
- For the first time Dani begins to reevaluate the monster as she swims back to the short drenching wet. Tracking closeup of Dani
- Back to the Start
- Another flashback where Dani is now in middle school. She has begun to experiment more with fashion but is now being teased relentlessly. The monster is once again present and defensive
- The Monster is Real
- For the first time in her life Dani fights back and the monster comes in to defend her. While not obvious in the storyboard the monster here is merely a reflection and is seen as a wave of magical energy in the actual shot.
- Loss of Control
- Dani has finally realized the monster is a part of her and was there to protect her all along. Excising it entirely would be like cutting off a part of herself.
- Regret
- Dani flashbacks to the start of the film but now we see things from her perspective. The camera here is shaky and her mom is closeup to it and threatening.
- Acceptance
- The camera focuses on the monster seeing it first as a reflection that then begins to take corporeal form. The closeup allows us to see the monster is worried and defensive.
- Hug
- Dani loses control and the monster takes full physical form and attacks Danis mom.Tracking Shot on the monster.
- Calm
- Dani regrets her actions in realtime but she no longer has control and the monster attacks her mom. Now from her perspective we see Danis pain and emotion.
- Child Emerges
- Danis arms begin to close as the monster leaps in the direction of the camera towards Dani
- Reunited
- Dani hugs the monster as it flails around and attacks her
- The Journey Home
- The monster beins to calm down in Danis embrace
- Here Comes the Sun
- As the monster sleeps peacefully Danis childhood self appears in the lake happy and content.
- Weeping Willow
- Danis childhood self emerges fully from the lake and Dani notices her and greets her like an old friend.
- The End
- Arm in Arm Dani leaves the lake with the monster and her childhood self to begin the journey home. Not healed but able to move forward one step at a time. The camera zooms in on the lake after they leave
- The sun begins to rise on the lake which now looks calm and serene.
- A Willow tree sprouts from the ground dropping and sad but standing strong. The camera focuses on it with a rainbow in the distance as the scene fades to black
