- Mia, her mom, her dad, and her little brother are driving from their house in Oregon to their grandparents. In the car they listen npr and classical music.

- The car is destroyed due to the impact of a four ton truck. Mia thinks that she is fine and was not hurt in the crash. She walks from where she was thrown and finds her family members on the verge of death, and the car completely destroyed.
- Mia walks around some more and eventually finds here body laying on the ground, covered in blood. At first she thinks that she is a ghost and that her body is dead. An ambulance comes and takes her body to a hospital.
- "Am I dead? I actually have to ask myself this. Am I dead?"(19)
- When Mia's at the hospital she figures out that she is not dead, she is just in a coma and somehow her mind is out of her body. She wonders around the hospital and figures out that her mom, dad, and brother all died in the car crash. Mia also realizes that she needs to decide whether to stay alive or let herself die.
- Many family members and friends come to the hospital and visit her. Some of them tell her that it is okay if she decides to die and others tell her that they need her to stay alive. Mia has a hard choice because she knows that if she wakes up she won't be able to do the things she loves anymore like play cello and also all of her family is already dead.
- “If you stay, I'll do whatever you want... maybe coming back to your old life would be too painful...I'll let you go. If you stay."(231)
- Her boyfriend, Adam, comes to visit her. He cries and tells her to stay alive because he could not live without her. Then Adam plays one of Mia's favorite artists, Yo-Yo Ma. While the song is playing Mia's mind returns to her body and she wakes up.
