- Adam is depressed because he feels a lack of purpose in his life that stems from his alienation from God as a result of original sin. His feeling of lack of purpose is a common feeling when suffering with depression.

- Hey Adam, I noticed you seemed sad today during class. Is everything ok?
- Adam pretends like everything is fine, but really he is broken due to his lack of purpose, which is a characteristic of the false self which he adopted because through original sin he is alienated from himself. His depression is only worsened by pretending he is fine.
- Yeah Michael, everything is fine, I'm just tired today, that's all.
- Hi honey, how was school today
- You look sad, is something wrong?
- Adam again pretends like everything is fine, and is hurting his relationship and connection with his mom through his lying. His alienation from others contributes further to his depression because he is not accepting help from those who love him.
- School was fine, and I'm just tired, that's all.
- Okay, go relax and get ready to go to church later.
