- My name is Sophia! I have a little brother and he is a handful! I always have to look after him and help him.
- My little brother is scared of dogs and climbed up a building. Do I need to call 911 or can he jump without hurting himself? I'm 20ft away from the building and the angle from my feet to the top of the building is a 30 degree angle. I want to know how high the building is so I did tan(30)*40 which gave me about 23.09ft high. So, my brother is on top of a 23.09ft high building. Oh no! I need to call 911 right away!
- This time my brother got his kite stuck in a tree. He is 20ft away from the top of the tree and the angle from his feet to the top of the tree is 45 degrees. I need to figure out how tall the tree is to see if we should get a ladder to get it. I did sin(45)*20 which gets me about 14.14 ft. It is too risky to try to climb the tree. Let's go home and get a ladder!
- Now we are at the park and we are playing with a toy plane. My little brother wants to throw the plane, but there is a tree in the way. So, I need to find the angle of elevation at which he needs to throw the plane to pass the tree. He is 20ft away from the tree horizontally and the top of the tree is 40ft away from him. I used cos-1(20/40) which got me a 60 degree angle. I need to tell him to throw the plane with an angle of elevation of 60 degrees so that it passes the tree.
- Whew, that was a long day! I never thought I could use my geometry skills to guide my brother through the day and avoid any drama!
