The night of Sheila and Gerald’s Engagement party:
Inspector Goole interrupts the happy evening and the death of Eva Smith is announced:
Sheila hands back the engagement ring as she realises that Gerald cheated on her:
“It’s one of the happiest nights of my life, your engagement to Sheila means a tremendous lot to me.” -Mr Birling to Gerald.
Mr and Mrs Birling refuse to have anything to do with the death of Eva smith:
“Two hours ago a young woman died in the Infirmary. She’d been taken there this afternoon because she’d swallowed a lot of strong disinfectant. Burnt her inside out, of course.” -Inspector Goole.
Mrs Birling blames the death of Eva on the father of the child, without realising it was Eric:
“Yes, except for all last summer, when you never came near me, and I wondered what had happened to you.” -Sheila to Gerald.
The family still do not admit to Eva’s death and realise the Inspector was fake:
If you think you can bring any pressure to bear on me, Inspector, you’re quite mistaken. Unlike the other three, I did nothing I’m ashamed of or that won’t bear investigation.” -Mrs Birling.
“Go and look for the father of the child. It’s his responsibility.” -Mrs Birling.“You turned her away, yes, and you killed her, and the child she’d have had too, my child, your own grandchild you killed them both- damn you.” -Eric to Mrs Birling.
‘He certainly didn’t make me confess, I had done no more than my duty.” -Mrs Birling.“Probably a Socialist or some sort of crank.” - Mr Birling.“But how do you know it’s the same girl? We’ve no proof it was the same photograph and therefore no proof it was the same girl.” -Gerald.
