- In ancient times, there was a monster named Nian, with sharp teeth, long tentacles, and extremely fierce. He lived in the bottom of the sea all the year and only climbed up on New Year's Eve. It will hurt people and swallow livestock. Therefore, every New Year's Eve, villagers would hide in the mountains to avoid being harmed by Nian.
- One year on New Year's Eve, an old beggar came to this village. All the villages were in a hurry and panic, only an old woman gave the old beggar some food and advised him to hide in the mountains to escape the monster. But the old man smiled and said to her. Although the old woman continued to persuade, the old man was smiling without a word.
- It must be the old beggar, he helped us to protect the village! He said he knew how to drive away the monster.

- At midnight, Nian broke into the village, but it found that the village was different this year. In the past, the whole village was in the darkness, but this time, every house was brightening. The monster saw all the doors and windows were pasted with red paper, and there were many lit candles inside the house.

- When the monster was about to approach the door of the old woman's house, there was a sudden loud blast in the yard. Nian was afraid and did not dare to move forward. It turns out that Nian was most afraid of red, fire and the sound of bamboo burning cracking. At this time, the old man came out in a red cloth and roaring with laughter.
- The next day was the first day of the first lunar month, the villagers who came back from the refuge were very surprised to see that the village was undamaged. At this time, the old woman suddenly realized and told the villagers about the promise of the old man. This incident soon spread in the surrounding villages, and all people knew how to drive out monster Nian.
- Therefore, every New Year's Eve, villagers pasted the red couplets and window cuttings, set off fireworks, keep the lights on and wait for New Year's Day.
