- Water
- Wow! Simple microscopes have one lens and they are similar to magnifying glasses. They used pond water or rain water to look at in the microscope. The simple microscope was made in 1675 by Anton Van Leeuwenhoek.
- Lenses
- Sick! Compound microscopes have two or more lenses to form and magnify an image! Matthias schleiden used compound microscopes to look at plant cells. The compound microscope was made in the 1830's by Robert Hooke.
- The 200 Years
- TEM which stands for Transmission electronic Microscope which uses a beam of electrons to form an image. You can't use living cells and keep them alive in a vacuum. The process would kill them.
- Plants
- Matthias Schleiden studied plants and discovered all plants were made of similar looking cells. All plant cells which he used a compound microscope to look at them with had a similar size shape and color. He discovered this in 1830.
- Animal cells
- Theodor Schwann studied animal cells and stated that cells were the building block of all living things. He also noticed each type of cell had a specific function. He used a compound microscope. This happened in the 1830's.
- Cells
- Rudolph Virchow looked at all the other scientists work and performed experiments. So he basically stole other scientists work. He proved that cells only come from other cells. He made this discovery in 1856.
