  • Definition of Foil Character
  • A foil is a character in literature who has opposite or conflicting traits to the main character. A foil character helps highlight certain attributes and characteristics of the main protagonist.
  • Banquo is the foil character in Macbeth. He is Macbeth's best friend and the rational, honorable man. When compared with Macbeth, he highlights Macbeth's ambition and the dangerous path it leads him on. Banquo also makes Macbeth's selfishness and recklessness evident. Both of the men hear a prophecy about themselves from the witches. Macbeth hears that he will be king and Banquo hears that his sons will be king.
  • The differences in these characters are evident in their different reactions to these prophecies. Banquo is more skeptical and suspicious of the witches. He doesn't act on the prophecy or encourage the murder of King Duncan because he wants to keep his conscience clear. On the other hand, Macbeth is consumed by the idea of becoming king. He lets his ambition control him until he is led to kill King Duncan so that he can be king.
