- Terrorism is the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. Terrorism has been around for centuries, but it has become increasingly prevalent in recent decades. In 2020, there were over 10,000 terrorist attacks worldwide, resulting in nearly 30,000 deaths. The most common targets of terrorism are civilians, followed by the military and the police. The most common forms of terrorism are bombings, armed assaults, hijackings, and hostage-taking. Terrorism can have a devastating impact on individuals, communities, and economies. It can also lead to political instability and conflict.
- In 2022, there were 5,226 terrorist attacks worldwide, resulting in 6,701 deaths. This represents a decrease in both the number of attacks and the number of deaths from 2021. The most common types of terrorist attacks in 2022 were bombings (41%), armed assaults (26%), and kidnappings (10%). The most common targets of terrorist attacks in 2022 were civilians (77%), followed by the police and military (12%). The most affected region in 2022 was the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), followed by South Asia and Central Asia. The top five countries most affected by terrorism in 2022 were Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Somalia.
