  • Knock Knock Knock
  • Hmm?
  • Lenore..
  • Lenore..
  • Similie- “On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before”"Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor"The speaker recalls a particular evening during one "bleak December," and is absorbed by thoughts of his newly-dead lover. December is a rather gray month, cold and dreary, and so the speaker refers to it as bleak.
  • *Flying*
  • Metaphor- "All my soul within me burning.""While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door."The speaker hears a sharp knocking at the door.
  • NEVERMORE
  • Is this bird evil?
  • Personification-embers in the fire as projecting their ghosts upon the floor"—here I opened wide the door;-Darkness there, and nothing more."He explains that he was almost asleep and wasn't sure if he was just hearing things . Then, suddenly, he throws open the door and finds nothing. Just the black night: "Darkness there and nothing more"
  • NEVERMORE
  • Allusion- "swung by seraphi""Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore;"He makes an effort to fling open the window, and with a little commotion, in comes a raven. The narrator describes the raven as one who looked rather royal, and like it belonged in the righteous or impressive times of the past.
  • Sensory detail- “the silken”, “sad”, “uncertain”"This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core;"He sits and thinks, and sits and thinks, in silence, "not one syllable expressing". He imagines the "fiery eyes" of the bird burning through into his "bosom's core
  • Imagery: "The silken" "Rustling"It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore."Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."He asks, in the name of God, if he will one day get to embrace his beloved Lenore again, in "the distant Aidenn" (i.e., Eden, or Heaven). The bird says, of course, "Nevermore."
