  • This scene relates to blood imagery because Lady Macbeth is haunted by the guilt of her bloody actions. She is rambling about how nothing will "sweeten" her hand, because the "smell" of blood is still on it. In reality, she cannot cleanse her conscience from the terrible things that she has done, which is causing her paranoia. The doctor is listening to her say all of these things, but does not know about the deeds Lady Macbeth has committed.
  • In this scene, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are in the dining hall after their banquet. Macbeth is shaken from seeing the ghost of Banquo, and he believes that he is unsafe in his home, haunted by his guilt. He says that the crimes he committed were so severe, that it is impossible to go back to being "good". The blood represents his guilt, and his inability to lead a normal life again.
