- EXPOSITION
- A teenage girl's secret love letters are discovered, causing havoc in her love life. Lara Jean Covey writes letters to all of her former loves, but they are only for her eyes. Until one day, when all of her previous loves receive all of her love letters.
- Where did all my letters go?? Dad? Have you seen a box in my room??
- RISING ACTION
- When Lara's sister, Kitty, is upset about something Lara did, she sent all of the love letters Lara had saved in her mother's special box.
- No, I haven't honey, why? what's wrong?
- CLIMAX
- Josh comes over around Christmas time to assist Lara Jean in putting up the Christmas tree. And Josh accidentally kisses Lara Jean, who kisses him back for a split second before realizing she doesn't like Josh as much as she thought she did.
- What was that?!
- Uhm... I'm sorry LJ, it was an accident...
- FALLING ACTION
- What happened?!
- They get into a big fight, and Peter, Lara Jean, and Josh all get involved. Margo overhears the fight and is heartbroken when she learns Josh and Lara Jean kissed. Peter leaves the party and appears to be out of the picture. The remainder of the party is a disaster for Lara Jean and Margo.
- It was an accident Peter!
- LJ, let me talk to you!
- Everyone who received a letter from Lara Jean approached her, and she stated that it had been a long time. Josh expressed his feelings for Lara Jean, but she no longer has feelings for him. Peter and Lara Jean end up getting married.

- The novel's central theme is coming-of-age, which is explored through the character of Lara Jean and her transformation from a child who is overly reliant on her family to a more mature character capable of making independent decisions and living her own life.
