storyboard about different brakes, airbags, and engines

Storyboard Tekst

  • Hello! I'm looking to buy a new car and I heard the electric and hybrids, have different brakes systems than a fuel powered. Can you Explain the difference?
  • Sure, no problem!
  • Failure? That doesn't sound good!
  • Although the electric and hybrids, have a regenerative brake system, keep in mind they also have traditional non-regenerative friction brakes, in case of electrical failure.
  • WOW! That is really cool! Do you know how it works?
  • You see, Sir, the electric cars also have electric brakes, which are powered by the regenerated kinetic energy, and converted into re-usable energy.
  • There are many types of brakes: Air Brakes - which are mainly used on trucks, trains, buses, construction vehicles (such as cranes). These are also known as compressed air brakes. Even though hydraulic brakes are great, the reality is, air is everywhere, but hydraulic fluids aren't.
  • Some of the reasons are they cut down pollution, improved performance and less wear of the engine.
  • Air Brakes Continued - If a larger form of transportation like trucks or trains relied only on hydraulic brakes- in the event of an accident these vehicles would be speeding bullets. This is probably the most complex manual braking system there is; the system has to be charged before the brakes will even release. If not used properly, you can end up being seriously injured.
  • Also, some of these braking systems can recapture and store up to 70% of the kinetic energy that would have been lost with a conventional braking system.
  • Mechanical Disc Brakes - which are not likely used anymore in vehicles, but are not completely gone from use. They are made similar to disc brakes, however, these use brake shoes, not pads. Like a number of other braking systems, these use friction to turn the cars momentum into heat.
  • That's a lot of reasons to purchase a car with electric brakes.
  • Yes, it is! There are a number of reasons besides the brakes.
  • Hydraulic Disc Brakes - which are used on majority of vehicles, at least on the front brakes these days. These are more superior to drum brakes by far. This system is efficient and uses a non-compressible fluid, like oil, that can even be split and used with a forked, bent or coiled pipes. making dynamics of hydraulic systems easy to design.
  • Why are these car brakes better than conventional car brakes?
  • Rear Drum Brakes -these are still commonly used in smaller or compact vehicles, because their weight allows sufficient braking power. Because theses smaller, compacted vehicles can be somewhat pricey to build, and the size allows the drum brakes system to provide adequate safety and they are cost efficient, too, they are still often used on many compact models.
  • That's a lot!
  • 4 Wheel Drum Brakes - these are rare, and are not as effective as the newer, more innovative designs. Theses work the same as mechanical disc brakes, except they were/are installed on all four tires. This was a system mainly used before the luxury of power-assisted braking.
