- Preceptor: Oh no, we're going to run behind schedule as the second buddy
- In the ward there is a buddy system in place during nursing handover so that come break time, each nurse knows the background of their buddy and can therefore cover their buddys' patient load whilst the nurse goes on break. Unfortunately we were the second buddy to receive handover in this situation
- Its 0830hrs and we have just started vital signs for our 5 patient's allocated to us. I was left to do vital signs whilst my preceptor started on medications. This needed to be completed by 0930hrs in time for rapid rounds with the charge nurse.
- Thanks for coming to rapid rounds on time. We are short staffed today. Preceptor, you and your student have 1xmanual wash out to complete, 1x TROC, 2 full cares patients' and 1x catheter flush to complete. Dont forget your breaks at 10am and 1230.
- Hi Mrs A, were here to do a catheter flush and bedwash at the same time ok.
- 10am: Currently setting up catheter flush trolley, preparing the patient and then will initiate the procedure
- 1045am: Catheter flush completed. Starting bedwash.
- Hey guys, look its 11am and youre 1 hour overdue. You guys really need to take your break now. Stop what you're doing and please go on break,
- I don't think we should leave the patient in bed laying on wet linen, but the boss is telling us to go break because we're an hour overdue.
- The dilemma: do we leave Mrs A there for 15min still laying on wet linen and a half completed bed wash or do we complete the task and go on break afterwards disregarding the charge nurse advice to go on break now. Non-malficence states to do no harm, which can be applicable to both the patient and the nurse. By leaving Mrs A there we increase the patients's risk of infection, disregard patient dignity but also risk ourselves of fatigue and bunout.
