Women are most likely to suffer and be victims of Domestic violence in society due to the physical differences from their male counterparts therefore making them easily overpowered by men within their relationshipVictims of domestic violence may be unwilling to report it to the police due to them being intimidated by their abuser who may go to extreme lengths to make them stay, furthermore the abuser may make threats such as harming children they have etc which may cause the victim to stay to prevent further harm being done to others - this may effect women more as they may have a more nurturing relationship with the children Seeking help may have a negative impact on them, also there is a social stigma on men being abused which emasculates them and have negative emotional impact on them as well and society expects men to be strong and not be victimised by people and this causes men to be unwilling to report it as they don't want appear weak Functionalist view the family as a very important institution that preforms many functions such as socialisation of children and protecting its members, therefore functionalist will ignore the dysfunction of the family concerning domestic violence as they see the family as a good thing Radical feminists believe that domestic violence is evidence of patriarchy in society, and widespread domestic violence preserves power for men and for men to remain in power (subordination of women). A male dominated CJS is evidence and explanation to the possible reluctance in effectively dealing with cases of Domestic violence - however, this fails to recognise that many men hate domestic violence ( Faith Robertson Elliot (1996) and men can be victims of domestic violence themselves Families that face economic hardship also face a lot of social stresses of everyday life therefore this can break down relationships within the family and break down the family unit resulting in it being dysfunctional - this results in violence in the home Marxists would blame the social structure of society and say this is directly due to capitalist society and the inequality financially between classes and lack of a a welfare state to support low income families who face economic hardship , furthermore they would say that the family is dysfunctional as it cannot serve its members appropriately The radical feminist explanation emphasises the role of patriarchal ideas, cultural values and institutions being the cause to domestic violence The materialistic explanation emphasises the economic factors such as lack of resources - explains why families that suffer economic hardship are more likely to suffer from domestic violence - Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett (2010) see domestic violence as mainly being caused by stresses on family members caused by social inequality - fails to explain why women rather than men are the main victims of domestic violence These sociologists argue that all societies have been founded on patriarchy and they see a key division within society between men and women and men are the oppressors and exploiters of women - men dominate women within the family and marriage is patriarchal as well Young women, those in lowest social classes and living in deprived areas, low income families, those in shared rented accommodation, those with high alcohol consumption/drug abusers, those with long term illness/disabilityMarxists feminists also believe its due to inequality such as Fran Ansley (1972) who says women are the takers of shit and domestic violence is the product of capitalism as male workers are exploited take their frustration out off their wives - this helps to explain why domestic violence is male violence against women but fails to explain why not all male workers do this to their partners and doesn't count for cases of female domestic violence towards men
Domestic violence can be caused due to multiple reasons such as stresses of everyday life e.g. work, financial hardship, expectations and the family is unable to deal with these stresses causing a break down in the family unit and relationships caused violence to be resorted to in order to relieve these stresses that people have. In addition women are more likely to be victims of domestic violence however men are victims as well and social stigmas prevent men from freely speaking out about them being victims of abuse as they feel emasculated and have a negative emotional impact on them. Different sociological perspective will see domestic violence different and the causes of domestic violence within couples and the home and how to prevent it, however with social changes and stigmas of domestic abuse changing these issues are becoming more effectively dealt with in many cases.
