- One day a girl and her mom go on a walk through a nearby park.
- Hey mom, why is there so much clear space in the middle of the woods?
- That's what we call clearcutting. This is a logging practice where trees are cut down in a certain area.
- This system is an efficient method of harvesting and replanting trees and also increases farmland
- Oh wow! So it's a good thing?
- These include increased stream flow during storms and a loss of habitat and species diversity.
- Well not necessarily. You see there are both good things and bad things about clearcutting.
- With this system only some of the trees get cut down. This keeps resources in check and helps the environment.
- This is why there are better systems out there such as selective cutting!
- This is why we have the concept of sustainability.
- This is responsibly interacting with the planet to maintain natural resources for future generations.
- Some examples of this would be controlling weeds and removing some trees for sunlight in the forest
