- In chapter 21, Holden enters the room that Phoebe is sleeping in. He snoops around, and finds her notebook with all of her writing in it. Most of the stuff in her notebook was just a bunch of little kid stuff. However, Holden gets lost while reading this notebook and lights another cigarette.
- In the next chapter, we are in the same setting. Phoebe and Holden are having a genuine conversation. Phoebe brings up the fact that Holden does not like anything. Holden is flustered, and is told to think of something he likes alot. However Holden cannot concentrate at all. This ultimately upsets Holden, depressesing him even more, because it was Phoebe who said this and not just anyone else.
- Because you don't!
- Why in the hell did you have to say that!
- In chapter 23, Holden asks Phoebe to dance. Phoebe hops right out of bed, and they start dancing. Holden admires Phoebes dance moves, he goes more into depth about how when she was younger they used to dance all the time. This moment of them dancing almost heals Holden in a way. Holden also mentions how usually kids her age do not know how to dance. However, Phoebe's moves are really good, and it makes it easier for Holden as well.
