- Uncle's Death“As Salva watched, one of the men aimed his gun at Uncle. Three shots rang out.” (Park 63) This shows the time when Salva's Uncle was tied up and shot to death. After this incident, Salva nearly lost all hope. But he was walking faster than ever before and never gave up.

- Mariel's Death“It had taken him away, leaving only a few splotches of blood near the path” (Park 41) This shows the moment when Salva realized his best friend had died. He was eaten by lions as the group slept. Salva felt as if a cold fist gipped his heart. But thanks to Uncle he was there to keep him moving.

- Salva Stubbing His ToeSalva stubs his toe in the Akoba desert As the group is making their way to the Itang Refugee camp. Nearly his whole toenail come off and he couldn't handle the pain Almost all of the group members didn't care and continued to walk except Uncle. He played games with him to keep his mind off the pain
