- What started it allThe war started when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated in Sarajevo by a Serbian nationalist. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and soon other countries joined the fight.

- America got involved in the war in 1917 because of the sinking of the Lusitania, a passenger ship that was attacked by a German submarine. President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany in April of that year.
