Storyboard Tekst

  • How does the character look?
  • In The Vanishing Half, the twins are given a detailed description of how they look, “Twin girls, creamy skin, hazel eyes, wavy hair” (Bennett). This simple yet detailed description of how the twins look is a good way of filling in a void that many books have: certain qualities of a character are given, but not the specifics. In this case, this description allows readers to understand how Stella was able to pass for white.
  • What kind of person are they?
  • In The Vanishing Half, Stella is often described as someone who constantly avoids the truth, “But sometimes lying was an act of love. Stella had spent too long lying to tell the truth now, or maybe, there was nothing left to reveal. Maybe this was who she had become” (Bennett ). One of the key characteristics of Stella is that she is a liar. That’s it. She cannot stop lying to the people close to her about who she truly is or her past. To her, lying is an act of “love,” which is a very distorted way of thinking. A lie to her is a way of protecting. This can in turn make her seem like a person doing more harm than good, or even a selfish individual.
  • What actions do they take?
  • Stella takes every single course of action possible to make sure nobody knows the truth about her past, especially when it comes to Mallard, “I’ve never even heard of the place. Mallard, did you say” (Bennett). Stella has been lying to Kennedy her entire life about Mallard and the information that she gives out to keep the secrets of her past. It’s because of these actions that she can control the narrative surrounding her origins, preventing others from uncovering the truth about her.
