  • Many nationalist leaders fought to end colonial rule in their country by European countries in post-World War II Africa. The fights for independence in African nations were either peaceful or bloody rebellions. However, independence brought many challenges such as civil war, struggle into achieving a stable government or economy, and ethnic rival conflicts in the newly free African nations. When Kenya was granted independence after World War II, Kenya faced many conflicts between the different ethnic groups, causing Kenya to struggle to peacefully transition to self-rule.
  • Kenya was granted independence from Britain on December 12, 1963, because British leaders realized in the late 1950s that they risked catastrophic bloodshed if they continued to forcefully hold on to their East African colonies. After Kenya gained independence, Kenya struggled to transition to independence because of the rising problem of a high disproportion of members of different ethnic groups in official posts of the government such as more Kikuyu members, the first president Jomo Kenyatta's group. Which, including other conflicts in the government's actions, also brought concern among ethnic groups like the Luo group of a Kikuyu or ethnic plot by Jomo Kenyatta to benefit the Kikuyu at the price of other ethnic groups and accused the government of actions of self-interest.
  • One thing that could have been done to prevent Kenya's problem with self-rule with the conflict of government members from different ethnic groups in the government is to have an equal number of positions in the government for members of different ethnic groups. Which will allow different views including all ethnic groups and provide an equal standing to every ethnic group, leading to less possible conflict between the ethnic groups and fewer accusations or suspicions against the government that will bring more tension among citizens and ethnic groups.
  • Twenty-First Century
  • Kenya still faces the problem in the twenty-first century of the major difference in the number of official government members from different ethnic groups and the conflicts between the government and different ethnic groups that come with the problem in their self rule. As well as the many other conflicts between ethnic groups have also weakened the government in many ways today.
