What is this strange place? A castle on Ship-Trap Island! It must be a mirage!
In the beggining of the story, Rainsford swims over to Ship-Trap Island after falling off his boat. He starts to wonder around the jungle until he sees an enormous building. Rainsford says, "'Mirage,'... But it was no mirage, he foudn, when he opend the tall spiked iron gate."

I already told you, I never joke about hunting
After being let inside and having dinner with General Zaroff, the General invites Rainsford to go hunting with him. After General Zaroff tells him about hunting an animal that can reason. Rainsford says, "But no animal can reason." Zaroff told him, "My dear fellow... there is one that can." This is when Rainsford realized that he was talking about humans.

In the woods, General Zaroff comes to hunt Rainsford, coming so close that Rainsford can hear him say, "Rainsford... if you are withing sound of my voice, as I suppose you are, let me congratulate you. Not many men know how to make a Malay mancatcher. Luckily for meI, too, have hunted in Malacca.. I shall be back."

I can hide in the curtains until he comes back, then we will see who wins
After escaping General Zaroff and his hounds by jumping into the ocean, he swims back to the house where he hides for the rest of the time behind the curtains. General Zaroff comes back from his dinner when Rainfords pops out from behind the curtains and says, "Swam, I found it fquicker than walking through the jungle."

After their little altercation about the curtain, the general says, "I congratulate you... you have won." Rainsford says in a low voice, "I am still a beast at bay... Get ready, General Zaroff." What happened next was a duel between them with the general saying, "One of us is to furnish a repast fro the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed." "He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided."
