- Hey skinny bones! Pork chop, pork chop, did you eat your pork chop!?
- American History by Judith Ortiz Cofer. In Paterson New Jersey a girl named Elena, was living in El Building. The things events that happen to Elena happen on the same day as Kennedy's death.
- Hey. Your Eugene right?
- Look! It's skinny bones and the hick.
- Elena is getting bullied by the "black girls" because she wasn't turning the jump rope hard and fast enough for them. They made fun of her for being Puerto Rican. They made fun of what she ate, rice ,beans, and pork chops, they called her skinny bones.
- Your going out! Today
- Mama, I'm going to a friends house to study.
- Elena started to observe Eugene, she could see his backyard from El Building. Elena already liked Eugene by observing him, he would sit down and read books for hours. Eugene lived in the only house on the block that had a yard and trees.
- Eugene is a smart boy! He doesn't need to study. Go home.
- Elena makes the Courageous decision to talk to Eugene, she introduces herself to him and they became friends. The "black girls" bullied them for being friends. They called them "skinny bones" and the "hick".
- Elena had been invited to Eugene's house to study. Her mom told her to stay and to go pray for the president, that had just been shot. She said "I have to study" and she left to go see Eugene. She had been anticipating this ever since she had observed Eugene.
- When she got to Eugene's house his mom had judged her for living in El Building. Elena said she was there for Eugene, to study with him. His mom said "No,Eugene is a smart boy he doesn't need to study". Elena went home and cried on her bed.
