  • The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano
  • By Karen Ikomi, Alvin Ovrere, and Otito Tijani
  • Olaudah Equiano was the son of a tribal leader in the powerful kingdom of Benin. When he was just 11 years old, he and his sister were taken away from their home along with 15 million Africans through the 1500 and 1800. Almost 2 million died before even reaching their destination.
  • There were so many africans stored together under the deck of the ship that the environment became pestilential and many of them died during this time.
  • The 'whites' treated the Africans so cruelly that many of them jumped overboard to take their lives.
  • Seeing that Olaudah was just a child, he wasn't as harshly treated as many others. He would stay on the deck and become interested in many things like the quadrant that the sailors would use. To feed his curiosity, they would allow him look through the instruments.
  • The slave traders separated the blacks into parcel and examined them. The slaves were then taken to the merchant's yard where they were sold to the highest bidder.
