The Legend of Friar Almeida

- Legend has it that there was a Franciscan friar who liked to go out in the middle of the night to drink aguardiente, his story is located in the convent of San Diego in the center of the city of Quito.
- To take his midnight escapades, the friar climbed a tower which led to the outskirts of the convent, in this same tower was a life-size figure of Christ.
- In one of his thousands of clandestine nights the friar went out where he was used to, until he heard a voice saying "Until when, Friar Almeida", to which he answered "Until the return, my Lord!" and went out again.
- When he was already drunk, he left the canteen where he used to drink and started his way back to the convent amidst staggering and jocular laughter.
- In the middle of the way he ran into several men carrying a coffin, and when he bumped into them, the contents of the coffin were revealed, the friar being inside it.
- It is said that from that moment all signs of drunkenness disappeared and since then Friar Almeida did not drink again and the Christ of the tower smiled...
