  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due om Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that mankind is its own worse enemy. For example, when Les Goodman's car started working it should have been a good thing, but instead the neighbors decided to take this as an excuse to make him a scapegoat and believe he is an alien. They used their fear to turn on him, their own friend, to make more problems without realizing it. Another piece of evidence I found is when Charlie shot Pete Van Horn. Charlie only wanted to protect his neighbors and they all didnt know how the dark figure was, however once he shot the figure and they realized it was just Van Horn everyone took the opportunity to blame him even when no one was sure who was the dark figure. Lastly, towards the end all the problems they created resulted into desperatly blaming one another trying to find a scapegoat with only a few evidence they found that should be some what normal. From a friendly neighborhood to chaotic place shows that people are willing to make problems unintentionally when strange things occur making mankind their own worst enemy.
