  • B) Hello, it is a pleasure to meet you as well. I am excited to hear how Haley is doing in classes.
  • A) Good afternoon, Mr. Smith, it is great to meet you! I am Haley’s teacher, Mr. Moreland.
  • Great! Why don’t we jump right in and I will begin by highlighting some of Haley’s strengths and places we are working with her to grow more in.
  • B) Excellent! I am so happy to hear she is taking part in classes and engaging with the curriculum. She often mentions what she learns in classes at home, and I enjoy that quite a bit.
  • A) To begin, Haley is a dream to have in class because of her willingness to participate and her intrinsic motivation to learn as much as possible each day. She is excited about so many subjects, but particularly about art, science, and writing. She has a very creative mind and thrives in any class where she is able to use her imagination or find out more about the physical world around us.
  • A) Yes, Haley is academically gifted and thriving here at our academy. However, schools are places of growth and there are a few places in her academic career that Haley is working hard to grow in. Firstly, Haley has a few poor social habits like shouting at friends, not sitting nicely during work time, competing with others, and using unkind words. We are hoping to find some clues to her uncharacteristic behavior and form a plan of action to help her grow to the best of her ability.
  • B) Ah, I can’t say I am surprised about this behavior. She has begun exhibiting the same short temper and unkind words at home as well. My wife and I are unsure how to proceed to help her since it is so out of character for her. There is nothing out of the ordinary at home, so the onset of this behavior is very confusing for us as well.
  • A) I would like to recommend our student counselor to you, her name is Julie and she is great at working with students to learn to manage their own thoughts and feelings. She works with all kinds of students ranging from those with severe disabilities to those who just need someone to talk to. She might be of some assistance in helping us figure out where this out of character behavior stems from in Haley. If you and your wife would be comfortable with them meeting once a week during our free work class, I think Haley could benefit greatly.
  • B) Oh! I didn’t know the school had a school counselor available, that is great to hear. If Haley were to meet with a school counselor, do you think the other students would think less of her? She isn’t going to get teased or bullied for that would she?
  • A) Oh I definitely don’t think so! If anything, the other students might be jealous of her. Ms. Julie comes to every class each week and does a fun behavioral management class with students and the whole school adores her and her fun activities. Most students have a great relationship with her and look forward to seeing her, Haley included. It is also an option for Haley to see her after school hours for 20-30 minutes if you don’t want her to miss out on free periods. We have a separate shuttle for students who stay late with Ms. Julie as well.
  • B) That is very reassuring! I will certainly go home and mention this to my wife and we will make a decision and let the school know when we do. Thank you so much, Mr. Moreland. I appreciate all you've done and being open and honest with me. I know you have my daughter's best interest in mind.
