- Yeah, Matt, dat mule so skinny till de woman is usin' his rib bones for a rub board
- Dat mule uh yourn, Matt. You better go see 'bout him. De womanfolks got yo' mule had him flat on his sidesfuh uh wash board
- Youse a stinkin' lie, Sam, and yo' feet ain't mates.
- The teasing continues as they criticize Matt Bonner's care taking abilities for his mule.
- Aw man 'tain't no use in you gittin' mad.
- Ah-ah-ah does feed 'im! Ah g-g-gived 'im uh full cup of cawn every feedin'.
- Yuh know yuh don't feed de mule.
- The men on the porch continue to tease Matt about his mule until he finally walks away. Still the talk continues.
- Aw, naw, aw, naw. You stop dat right now. Dat mule don't think Ah look lak no Matt Bonner. He ain't dat dumb.
- Maybe de mule takes out after everybody 'cause he thinks everybody he hear comin' is Matt Bonner comin' tuh work 'im on an empty stomach.
- Janie always loved the conversations, but she was never allowed to participate in porch talk.
- Joe was jealous and constantly forced Janie out of the fun and into the store.
- You'se Mrs. Mayor Starks, Janie. I god, Ah what uh woman uh yo' stability would want tuh be treasurin' all dat gum-grease.
- Instead, Janie was forced to work in a store she hated dressed a way she hated; Janie was not allowed to be herself.
