- the stringy pieces of DNA in the nucleus are called chromatin
- the chromosomes condense or break down and become visible and Each half of the chromosome is a sister chromatoid they are identical. During prophase, the nucleus disintegrates. In this phase, you can see spindle fibers.

- in metaphase, the chromosomes line up single file in the middle of the cell. Each half points in different directions. The spindle fibers are in the center of each chromosome.
