- The elephants lived a happy live. Their species had come from a common ancestor, but thanks to genetic variation the population had different phenotypes. The new mutations didnt favor the species, so the population stayed more or less the same.
- The elephant's natural predator had a hard time eating elephants with tusks, but an easy one hunting the few ones that didnt.
- One day, the apex predator changed in their habitat, also becoming a prey.
- Humans realized they can sell the elephant's tusks for a lot of money
- Humans only killed the elephants with tusks. The adaptations they had to fight their original predators had turned against them.
- The elephants that didnt have tusks where not hunted down. They had natural selection in thier favor. Since thier genotype was different so was their phenotype, and as time went on, this few elephants passed their traits down to their offspring, who reproduced and changed the population compleately. Their species had just experienced evolution.
