Buck lives with John. For now.....

Buck doesn't do much for the following couple of days except cry over John, who perished in the struggle with the Yeehats after Buck beast off the last ones.

Buck was no longer bound by man or man's demands after John Thornton died. Buck's Valley had been overtaken by the wolf pack that had pursued the Yeehats. Buck battled the pack off for an hour and a half, tearing throats and cutting shoulders. He continued backing up to keep them from coming behind him, and they forced him down until he was surrounded. Buck recognised one of them when he came up to him in a friendly manner, and they rubbed noses. Then an elderly man stepped forward, snarled his lips, sat, and howled.
