  • Negotiations with French Officials Fall Apart | May 1792
  • This event is significant to include as it characterizes the French as continuing their unwillingness to provide freedom to the slaves of Saint Domingue even after many months of fighting. The French believe their offering of a select few prominent black individuals to be freed will be enough for the uprising to be quelled. However, they failed to realize the true scale of the conflict at hand.
  • We will free only a few of you.
  • This alliance is significant not only for the Revolution itself, but for the world as a whole. The alliance made liberation for the slaves a much more realistic goal while also serving as the first example of a European power allying with slaves. It is important to note how the slaves of Saint Domingue were considered a large enough threat to be considered an important ally by powerful European nations such as Spain and England.
  • Slaves Ally with the Spanish British May 1793
  • Slavery is Abolished by the National Convention | February 4, 1794
  • The abolition of slavery within the French colonies as a result of the uprising in Saint Domingue is arguably the most significant event that comes out of the Revolution. It established the Haitian Revolution as the first successful slave rebellion within the Caribbean.
